Courses of Instruction: High School San Diego COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY Keyboarding is a study and practice of the proper techniques used in keyboarding. In lieu of classroom instruction the keyboarding requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency on the NAD Keyboard and Document Production Competency Tests. 5 Semester Periods or Waiver Tests Computer Literacy is an introduction to the history of the computer, what it does, how it works, and how you can use it. In lieu of classroom instruction, the Computer Literacy requirement may be met by successfully passing the NAD Computer Literacy Competency Tests. 5 Semester Periods or Waiver Tests Computer Applications I is an individualized, hands-on computer applications lab that allows the student to gain a working knowledge of various computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, programming and business functions. 5 Semester Periods Computer Applications II is an advanced, hands-on computer technology lab. 5 Semester Periods FINE ARTS Bell Tones is an organization composed of students who perform beginner and intermediate handbell repertoire. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Choir is an organization composed of students who enjoy good music. The class includes studies of representative sacred and secular choral works of various periods and presents those works in concert. Attendance is required at scheduled performances and tours. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Concert Band is an applied music course. Students study representative sacred and secular band works and perform them in concert. Repertoire is selected from various musical styles. Membership is by audition or permission of the instructor. Attendance is required at scheduled performances and tours. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Drama is an organization composed of students who enjoy performance, acting, and dramatic expression. The class includes spiritual and secular skits and plays. Students will also attend plays in the community and learn about the theatrical process. Attendance is required at scheduled performances and field trips. Handbells is an applied/honors music course. Students may qualify for the class by audition or by invitation only. Handbell groups perform advanced repertoire both sacred and secular in a variety of settings. Attendance is required at scheduled performances and the annual festival and tour. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Music Lessons are available for instruments, voice, piano, and organ. The student is taught at his/her own level and progress is determined by ability and practice. Students take one weekly 30 minute lesson and practice a minimum of 30 minutes five times per week. Each Semester, 2.5 Semester Periods Basic Art will cover the fundamentals of drawing, perspective, shade, shadow, and composition. The course will satisfy the fine arts requirement for students who do not wish to take Band or Choir. 5 Semester Periods LANGUAGE ARTS English as a Second Language (ESL) is a class for students with limited English proficiency. Through careful, graduated readings and computer exercises the student will increase vocabulary, reading, and general English usage skills. Arranged Competency Reading is an individualized reading program which includes word analysis, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading skills for each student. The course can be applied once toward English graduation requirements. Arranged English I examines forms of communication through the study of literature. The course also includes an emphasis on writing, vocabulary study, and library use. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods English II acquaints the student with the structural tools that authors use to create literary forms. Students will experience and become proficient with various forms of writing. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods English III offers continued practice in the basic forms of composition. The course includes a chronological survey of American literature featuring major works by American authors. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods English IV prepares students for college and lifetime writing, including research papers. The course includes a chronological survey of British literature. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods MATHEMATICS Consumer Math is a practical course designed for students who need extra help with the fundamentals of arithmetic. The course is preparatory to Algebra I with an emphasis on the consumer applications of math. One or More Semesters, 5 Semester Periods/Semester Algebra I is a study of processes involved in solving problems by algebraic methods. Students study positive and negative numbers, equations, square roots, radicals, factors, percents, graphs, quadratics, and trigonometry of the right triangle. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Algebra II is a review of topics from Algebra I and further study of quadratic equations and functions, linear and quadratic systems, and graphs. Also included is the study of functions, exponents and logarithms, elementary analytic geometry and trigonometry. Prerequisite: Algebra I. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Geometry is the study of points, lines, planes and angle, and of plane figures such as triangles, quadrilaterals, other polygons, and circles. Methods include definitions, relationships, algebraic deductive proofs, and constructions. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Pre-Calculus is a course designed for students who plan to take mathematics or science majors in college, or who will take calculus as part of a professional program. Topics include a review of algebra, coordinate geometry, conics, functions, trigonometry, exponents, logarithms, limits and vectors. Prerequisite: Two semesters of Algebra II with a grade of B- or better or passing a Pre-Calculus entrance exam. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Calculus is an introductory calculus course with applications to business, life, and social sciences. Topics include limits; continuity; first, second, and partial derivatives; maximum and minimum; definite, indefinite, and improper integrals; and integration by parts. Prerequisite: Two semesters of Pre-Calculus with a grade of B- or better or passing a Calculus entrance exam. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods MODERN LANGUAGES Spanish I is an introductory course emphasizing understanding and speaking Spanish with a general acquaintance with Spanish grammar. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Spanish II is an advanced course in the study of the Spanish language with further emphasis on speaking, reading, and writing. Prerequisite: Spanish I or proficiency. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods PHYSICAL EDUCATION Coed Girls’ and Boys’ Physical Education is a survey course of both team and individual sports which introduces the student to the basic rules and skills necessary to enjoy sports. The class also increases awareness of the importance of lifetime fitness. 5 Semester Periods each Semester Health is a course emphasizing biblical principles, consumer and environmental health, diet, exercise, general disease prevention, and body care. The student will be able to apply these concepts to daily living. One Semester, 5 Semester Periods RELIGIOUS STUDIES/BIBLE Bible I is a course that covers three areas of religious history. First, we look at the Bible and ask whether the Bible of today, both the Old and New Testaments, is accurate and trustworthy as the inspired Word of God. Secondly, we read the book of Genesis to see how God works through humanity in order to bring blessings and ultimately salvation to all who choose to follow and obey Him by grace through faith. The third area of study is the Life of Christ as seen in the four Gospels. By reading, studying, and discussing the lessons in the Gospels, each person in the class will face the greatest choice ever offered to humanity, the invitation of Jesus “Follow Me.” Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Bible II is a course that covers two phases of Christian history. First semester we journey through the “Christian history” of the Old Testament, reading the majority of the Pentateuch, the historical books, the Writings, and the Prophets. Second semester we will look at Christian history from the New Testament to the present. We will read portions of Acts, I and II Corinthians, I and II Peter, and I John and study the issues of the Early Church, the Dark Ages, the Reformation, as well as current issues and the end times in order to build our faith and discover our part in finishing the great work of the Gospel. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Bible III attempts to guide the student’s understanding of his/her place in the community of believers, with a development of an informed faith as its goal. The course is divided into four units which focus on the basic doctrines of the Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Bible IV/Family Living I focuses on Biblical principles basic to personal development and success in relationships in the home, church, and community. The course provides an opportunity to learn about self and to explore and practice skills that will contribute to a Christ-centered, Christ-like lifestyle in all areas of living. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods SCIENCE Biology is a generalized study including the nature of life, the community of life, microbiology, multicellular plants, invertebrate and vertebrate biology, and the biology of man. Laboratory work is required. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Chemistry is a study of elementary inorganic chemistry with an introduction to organic chemistry and radioactivity. It emphasizes the metric system, atomic structure, periodic nature, bonding, the mole, the writing and making of formulas; equations with their mass and mole relationships; the characteristics of liquids, solids, gasses, solutions, acids, bases, salts, kinetics; chemical equilibrium; and oxidation-reduction. The course also includes the scientific method, energy relationships, molecular models, titration, and the study of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. Laboratory work is required. Prerequisite: Algebra II with a grade of C or better or concurrent enrollment in Algebra II. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods General Science is an introductory study of the sciences of physics and chemistry. Topics covered include forces, electricity, magnetism, waves, light and sound, atoms, chemical bonding and chemical reactions. Mathematics is minimized in favor of the application and understanding of principles. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Conceptual Physics is a study of the laws of physics as related to the following fields: force and motion, energy and momentum, matter, heat, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, and atomic-nuclear physics. Additional topics include scientific methods, measurements, and problem solving. Laboratory work is required. Prerequisite: Two semesters of Algebra I with passing grades. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods SERVICE LEARNING All students are required to complete 100 clock hours of service learning. Students must accrue 25 clock hours of service learning each year in attendance at 25 clock hours per year of attendance SOCIAL SCIENCE Economics is a course which studies how major economic policies and decisions have impacted our daily lives. Supply and demand situations will be explored. One Semester, 5 Semester Periods Geography and World Cultures enables students to understand the historical, religious, and social factors that make our world such a fascinating and diversified place. The physical, cultural, and economic geography of various groups will be studied. Students will discover how culture and other forces affect their own lives. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods Government is a required course for graduation. Students study the various forms of government with emphasis on the One Semester, 5 Semester Periods United States History is an overview of the political, economic, social, and philosophical aspects of Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods World History is an overview of the economic, geographic, religious, and political factors which have influenced man’s development in society from early times to the present. Emphasis is also placed on current issues. Two Semesters, 10 Semester Periods WORK EXPERIENCE Work Experience provides students with an opportunity to explore and experience the world of work. Work Experience is an independent study course which allows students the opportunity to demonstrate responsibility and independence. Students are required to complete ten units of credit to graduate.
