Discipline
Any time a group of people live in close contact with one another in a community setting such as a school, the group must have rules and regulations to allow the community to accomplish the goals it has set for itself. It is the goal of any good discipline procedure to bring the individual’s function in the community into voluntary compliance with the rules and regulations established by the community. Unfortunately, in a school setting sometimes members of the community find themselves at odds with the rules and regulations. It becomes important to bring such students back into compliance with the rules and regulations while maintaining their dignity and the freedom to make decisions for themselves. DISCIPLINE PROCEDURE In most situations, staff members are asked to deal with the discipline problems they encounter. It is important for students to know specifically what behavior is disruptive to the accomplishment of the school’s goals. The teacher should explain what the student needs to do to be in compliance. The teacher may also write a citizenship referral. A copy of this referral will be placed in the discipline file by the administration and may require a parent’s signature. The purpose of the referral is to provide a paper record of the incident, provide the administration with a complete record of ongoing problems, and to notify parents of the problem. Staff members are encouraged to contact the parents to explain the problem in an effort to find solutions. If the problem is not solved by the staff member, the staff member then refers the problem to administration. Some problems may be serious enough to warrant immediate referral to the principal. The principal will, through conferences with the student, staff member, and parents, help find a solution to the problem. At times it may be necessary to suspend a student until a workable solution can be found. At this level the problem is considered serious, and various solutions from contracts to suspension may be used. SUSPENSION If suspended from school for disciplinary reasons during the current or previous semester, the student may not run for office. If s/he is suspended while holding office, s/he may petition the Administrative Committee to retain office. |
