BICYCLES, SCOOTERS, AND SKATEBOARDS

Students who use bicycles, scooters, and skateboards as transportation to and from school are not to ride them on campus at any time. Bicycles, scooters, and skateboards must be walked or carried off campus before the student rides them home.

CARDS

Card games, i.e. poker, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, are not an appropriate school activity. Please leave all playing cards at home.

CASH AND VALUABLES ON CAMPUS

Students are discouraged from bringing money and personal valuables on campus. The school is not responsible for them should they become lost or stolen. Students are encouraged to respect the property of others. Lockers should not be considered a suitable storage place for valuables.

CELLULAR/MOBILE PHONES

Cellular/mobile phones and pagers may not to be used on campus in any capacity (phone calls, text messages, picture taking, game playing, etc.) by K-12 students between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM.  They must be out of sight and not heard.

Students in grades 9-12 may use mobile phones during the lunch break. Cellular/mobile phones may not be used during any other break, period, or study hall.

Failure to comply with this policy will result in the loss of the phone for one day with a second offense resulting in the loss of the phone for one week. The principal will handle further offenses on an individual basis.

Parents and students are urged to plan ahead so that phone calls to students during class time are not necessary. However, when circumstances deem that a call is necessary between a student and parent during school hours, parents are asked to call the school office; and students, when needing to call to parents, should use the office phone.

CITIZENSHIP & BEHAVIOR STANDARDS

San Diego Academy supports and maintains the ideals of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in matters of morals, dress, and conduct. It is mutually agreed that every student who attends SDA pledges to uphold Christian principles, abide by SDA rules and regulations, and obey the laws of the land.

Respect is to be shown at all times to God, teachers and staff, and fellow students. Defiant, insubordinate behavior will not be tolerated and may result in suspension.

SDA seeks to develop a strong moral character and thus will not permit dishonesty, theft, foul language, sexual innuendo and inappropriate sexual conversation, or other misconduct at school or school functions.

Any behavior that could result in physical or emotional harm to another student will not be tolerated; i.e. fighting, bullying, intimidating, hazing (including birthday punches), and derogatory remarks.

CONFISCATED ITEMS

Any items brought on campus, which violate school regulations, or any item used in an inappropriate or disruptive manner may be subject to confiscation. Such items will be returned at the discretion of the teacher and/or administration.

CLOSED CAMPUS

San Diego Academy has a closed campus which means that when students arrive for class in the morning, they are to remain on campus until their school day has been completed. Students may not leave campus during lunchtime or during a free period. The principal may give permission to leave for extraordinary circumstances.

FREE PERIOD

Students are to be in an assigned location with a supervisor during school hours. Students who do not have a class will be assigned to a Research Lab, or they can arrange to work on campus.

GANG AFFILIATION

Gang membership, affiliation, or recruitment is not allowed for students of San Diego Academy.  The violent, destructive influence of gangs and their associated activities are inappropriate on the campus of a school modeled on Christian ideals. Membership or participation in, affiliation with, or dressing like any gang may result in disciplinary procedures.

GUM

Gum is not permitted on campus at any time.

LAPTOP COMPUTERS

While personal computers can serve as tools for students in class, they can also be misused and/or become a distraction. Each teacher has the right to establish their own guidelines for personal computer use in his/her classroom, as well as to ban them from use in his/her classroom. A student who abuses the privilege forfeits the right to bring a personal computer into the classroom.

LOCKERS

Lockers are available for students in grades 7-12. The lockers are the property of San Diego Academy and as such, students may not write on or in them, put stickers on them, or decorate them in any way. Any pictures displayed inside a locker must be in harmony with Christian standards. San Diego Academy also reserves the right to inspect any or all lockers without prior notice when deemed necessary. The school will not be held liable for any items lost, stolen, or damaged.

In order to protect personal property, students must keep the lockers locked when storing items. Students should keep their combination numbers private and not share them with others.

Gym lockers are also available to protect personal belongings while in P.E. class. Students will need to provide their own combination padlock for their gym lockers. P.E. teachers may ask for their locks' combinations to keep on record in case a student forgets the number.

LOITERING
Students are encouraged to leave campus within 15 minutes after the school day ends if they are not working, studying with a teacher, or engaged in intramurals or other school activities. K-8 students who arrive before 7:30 a.m. and remain after 3:15 p.m. must check into before/after school care. This service is for the safety of our students. Parents who opt out of this service will need to pick up their students by 3:15.

LUNCH

Meal service is available Monday - Friday for a nominal charge. Meal tickets may be purchased from the food service provider. Students may choose to purchase lunch or bring lunch from home.

MINIMUM DAYS

Sometimes the school has a minimum day schedule for teacher meetings or before a holiday. Such days will follow the Friday schedule and school will start at 8:00 AM and dismiss at 1:20 PM.

MUTUAL AGREEMENT

It is mutually agreed that every student who applies for admittance to San Diego Academy thereby pledges to observe all regulations and uphold Christian principles. While every reasonable effort will be made to stimulate and inspire the student to develop the best that is in him/her, the academy cannot undertake the task of reforming students who are not in sympathy with its purposes. Therefore, it is understood that should a student break this pledge, s/he may be asked to withdraw.

PARKING

Visitor parking spaces are available in front of the school between the Administration Building and the gymnasium. Additional parking is available on Fourth Street. Please park in designated spaces only since other spaces are assigned to faculty and student drivers.

PASSES

Anytime a student leaves a classroom or assigned area during the school day, s/he must have permission from the teacher or supervisor. Students who work on campus during the day and finish early are to stay at their work station for the remainder of the period or report to the office where they will be assigned to a Research Lab. Failure to follow the policy may subject the student to a penalty.

PICKING UP AND DROPPING OFF STUDENTS

The most dangerous times on campus are at the beginning and end of the school day when students are being dropped off and picked up. Please be very careful.

Do Not park in the drive through in front of the school or double park in the traffic lanes. Do not drop off your students across the street and allow them to cross into traffic.

Do use the drive through for pickup and drop-off, or pull to the street curb in front of the school to pick up or drop off your student.

PRIVACY POLICY

San Diego Academy appreciates and respects your right to privacy. We are committed to maintaining a high level of privacy and confidentiality and will use personal information only as necessary and as permitted by law. We may collect nonpublic personal information about you from information we receive from you on the student application, emergency information and release form, and the financial contract. We restrict physical, electronic, and procedural access to personal information to trained and authorized employees who require such information in order to fulfill their responsibilities. We do not disclose any nonpublic personal information to third parties except to the extent necessary and permitted by law.

PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AFFECTION

Intimate and physical expression of love and affection is a sacred and personal matter, often considered in poor taste if displayed publicly. There is a time and place for everything, and the public display of affection on campus is considered out of place. SDA maintains a hands-off policy.

RADIOS, CD/MP3 PLAYERS, ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT

Electronic equipment does not belong on campus. iPOD®-type players are allowed on certain approved field trips but only when accompanied by headphones. The school is not responsible for stolen valuables.

SCHOOL TELEPHONES

School telephones are for school business. In case of emergency, students may use the office phone.

SEARCH POLICY

San Diego Academy reserves the right to search school lockers, desks, and personal property without cause to enforce school policy. This policy is designed to balance the privacy of the individual student while allowing school administration to maintain a safe environment for all students.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

San Diego Academy is committed to providing a school environment for all students which is free from sexual harassment. Incidents of harassment should be reported in accordance with the reporting procedure outlined below, so that school authorities may take appropriate action. Students who sexually harass others are subject to discipline up to and including dismissal. Employees who engage in sexual harassment are subject to discipline up to and including termination.

Definition: Unwelcome sexual advances, requests, or conduct of a sexual nature which is offensive. Such harassment can be spoken, written, or physical behavior. It includes but is not limited to offensive pictures, graffiti, jokes, and gestures. Sexual harassment occurs when the offensive behavior or material creates a hostile school environment. If submission to offensive sexual conduct is made a condition of academic status, progress, benefits, honors, or activities, it is sexual harassment.

Reporting Procedures: Students who have experienced sexual harassment shall report the incident to school authorities as soon as possible. If harassment is between students, a K-8 student shall report the incident to the classroom teacher; a 9-12 student may report to any 9-12 teacher. The student may also report to the principal, vice-principal, or counselor. If the harassment comes from an adult, the student shall report directly to the principal.

STUDENT DRIVERS/VEHICLES

Driving to and from school is a privilege granted to students by parents and administration. Before driving a car to school the Student Vehicle Registration Form must be completed and signed by both the student driver and parent/guardian.

Student vehicles are to be used only for the purpose of transporting the student to and from school. Student vehicles must remain parked in assigned spaces during the school day, and no one should be in the vehicle while it is parked on campus.

Student vehicles are not to be used during the school day unless special permission is granted by the school administration. Generally, the parent’s consent will be obtained by the administration before such permission will be granted. Student drivers may not drive on field trips, class trips, other school activities, and/or errands during school hours.

Student drivers who violate the vehicle policy will forfeit their right to drive to and from school and will be subject to other disciplinary action.

San Diego Academy is not responsible for any accidents occurring while the student vehicle is being driven to and from school.

Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is a serious act which violates the laws of the land, the policies of the school, Christian standards of conduct, and threatens the health and safety of participants and others who come under their influence.

Students who participate in the use or distribution of any form of alcohol, tobacco or illegal substance at any school-sponsored or non-school sponsored activity will be subject to disciplinary action.

Administration reserves the right to require students suspected of drug use to submit to drug testing if they wish to continue enrollment at SDA.

VANDALISM

Any student identified as participating in or contributing to defacement or destruction of school property or the personal property of those on campus will be held responsible, along with his/her family, for all repairs and any costs associated with the damage.

All campus guests must adhere to campus policies including dress guidelines.
